What Is a Guardian Home

At Autumn Breeze Dachshunds, our Guardian Home program allows select dogs from our breeding program to live full-time in loving family homes while remaining part of our program for a limited period.

Guardian dogs are not kennel dogs — they are cherished family pets who receive individual attention, companionship, and daily life experiences in a home setting. This program allows us to maintain a small, ethical breeding program while prioritizing the emotional and physical well-being of every dog.

Once the Guardian Agreement is fulfilled, full ownership of the dog is transferred to the Guardian family at no cost.

Guardian Home Agreement – Detailed Overview

A Guardian Home Agreement is a written contract between Autumn Breeze Dachshunds and the Guardian Family. The agreement clearly defines responsibilities, expectations, and protections for both parties, with the dog’s welfare as the highest priority.

Key Elements of the Agreement

Ownership & Breeding Rights

  • Autumn Breeze Dachshunds retains breeding rights until the agreement is completed

  • The Guardian Family provides a permanent, loving home

  • Full ownership transfers to the Guardian Family once breeding obligations are fulfilled

Ownership & Breeding Rights

The Guardian Family agrees to:

  • Provide a safe, indoor home environment

  • Supply high-quality nutrition

  • Maintain routine veterinary care

  • Provide training, exercise, and socialization

  • Treat the dog as a beloved family member at all times

Breeding & Medical Responsibilities

The breeder covers breeding-related expenses, including:

  • Health testing

  • Breeding

  • Pregnancy care

  • Whelping (unless otherwise stated)

  • The Guardian Family agrees to cooperate with scheduling and communication related to breeding needs

Veterinary Care & Communication

  • Guardian families must notify the breeder promptly of illness, injury, or health concerns

  • Emergency care should never be delayed

  • Decisions impacting breeding ability must be discussed with the breeder

Veterinary Care & Communication

After the dog completes their breeding commitment:

  • The dog will be spayed or neutered (typically at the breeder’s expense)

  • Full ownership is transferred to the Guardian Family

  • The dog remains with the family permanently

  • This agreement ensures transparency, fairness, and long-term protection for everyone involved — especially the dog.

Is a Guardian Home Right for You

A Guardian Home can be a rewarding experience, but it’s important to determine whether it truly fits your lifestyle.

A Guardian Home May Be Right for You If:

  • You want a top-quality dachshund without an upfront purchase price

  • You are committed to lifelong care and companionship

  • You are comfortable with temporary breeding commitments

  • You value clear communication and mutual respect

  • You live in or near Springfield, Missouri and surrounding areas

  • You are open to a written agreement that prioritizes the dog’s well-being

A Guardian Home May NOT Be Right for You If:

  • You prefer immediate full ownership and decision-making

  • You are uncomfortable with breeding responsibilities

  • You are unable to maintain communication or flexibility

  • You do not wish to be bound by a contract

Our goal is to create successful, supportive partnerships where everyone feels confident, informed, and respected.
